Musselburgh is a town of around 23000 just outside the boundary of Edinburgh. The Old Links Course, opposite Arden House, played on since 1672, is rumoured to be the oldest continuously played course in the world. Musselburgh Race Course has been in operation since 1777.

The land beyond the links, reclaimed since the 1960’s, has been transformed over time with the creation of forests, wild meadows, communal sports grounds, a boating pond, bird sanctuary and paved seawall walk. It is a popular area for dog walkers.

The nearby River Esk, with a paved walkway, meanders inland towards Inveresk, an attractive residential area to the south of Musselburgh.

In Musselburgh, there is a sports centre, parks, shops, several major supermarkets and many cafes and restaurants.
